Sep 11, 2016 MPlayerX is an alternative media player powered by ffmpeg and mplayer. MPlayer OS X ran OK, but it was slow. And also, the new technologies from Apple prevailed-such as Core Animation, Grand-Central Dispatch, even OpenCL-and pushed me to give them a try.

Let me start with the praise:Mplayer is very cool! I love its versatility and the Mac-port isreally turning out very well. Thank you so very much for it! Pleaseignore the notorious bitchers and moaners on Versiontracker that call.everything. 'unusable' cause of one minor glitch. Their arrogance andignorance is ashaming for every Mac-User!However, there are some errors/improvements i would love to see (fixed):1) MPlayer 2b4 still has playback-problems on my machine (G4-400,Radeon 8500, 10.2.6/QT6.2, 2GB RAM) that Mplayer 1.1 hasn't. Isometimes (quite often!) experience 'slow-motion'-Video in DivXs, wherethe video is played at half-speed and audio isn't.2) VLC is still the best performer on the same machine, although iwould prefer to use Mplayer due to its Onscreen-Menue andKeyboard-Fullscreen-Skip-Controls!
I just love these!3) Mousepointer is missing when switching back from fullscreen. Usuallythis could be solved by simply clicking once, but now i have to clickseveral times to make it reappear4) Please - Make Fullscreenswitching faster!;-) That fade looks niceand all that, but switching into fullscreen and back takes AGES, and iusually prefer to watch my stuff fullscreen, and if you go through awhole playlist this can be pretty annoying when switching forth andback takes like 10 seconds each time! VLC is top notch in this respect!5) Volume controls for fullscreen.
Please map some keys for that whichlink to the App-specific volume control, unfortunately not everyone isgifted with a new Apple Keyboard with the global volume control keys!;-) What's more is that you sometimes do NOT want to adjust the globalvolume!Anyway, keep up the great work!Regards,Daniel. Also, through some tests on my somewhat old computer (iMac G3 350 mhz), I have found opening quicktime mp4's, mov's, etc. In mozilla under the quicktime plugin works faster than using the quicktime application itself.Writing a QuickTime component is a rather complex task, and MPlayersimply isn't designed to be anything but a full blown media player. Thecore developer of MPlayer, Arpi, has started a project to redesignMPlayer, and it may result in something which better fits into theQuickTime architecture. However, as always with free software, this will only happen if someoneis willing to do it.
Personally, I see little reason in doing so; I'drather improve MPlayer and make it fit better into Mac OS X.- Dan. I just checked and it's consistently 1-2% slower playing an MP3. Ops it was my mistake. Yes its little slower than SDLI thought so; maybe it's because I have MPlayer do the 16bit int -32bit float conversion. Only rarely I heard cracking noise when is system realy busy. I sent an updated patch to mplayer-dev-eng with significantly increased buffers among other things. I believe it fixes most of it. Yes now all works perfectThanks:)BTW, could you take a look at the timer patch I submitted tomplayer-dev-end?
It should give near-perfect synchronisation. Now only native video output and SDL can be disabled.I totally agree, except that 'only' doesn't quite cover it. I have mylast exam on 12th of June, and I'll take a look after that. It'sdoable, but the question is if it's doable by me;) Thanks - This SF.net email is sponsored by: If flattening out C or Java code to make your application fit in a relational database is painful, don't do it! (Actually, I'm surprised yousend this to me.)About the GUI, I didn't even contribute to it, but some of the issuesyou point out are not easily fixed. Currently, it is practicallyimpossible to add buttons to the MPlayer window, or to remove one ofthe dock items, due to limitations in the way MPlayer displays thevideo on screen. It can be fixed, but it would be difficult and take alot of work, so I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you. Maybe I'llget it done, maybe someone else will, maybe nothing will be done;no-one knows.I'm sending a copy of this message to the MPlayerOSX mailing list. Please send further replies to that list. The icon is attached at the bottom of this mail (for the mailing list). It's pretty good, actually!BTW, maybe this should be sent to the MPlayer core developers?- DanOn Saturday, May 17, 2003, at 05:24 PM, Bart van de Biezen wrote: hi Dan, I created an icon for MPlayer. It is a start and may become even better. (there is also a file icon if you want it) (see attachment) All is vector based so scaling is not really a problem. In return;-) I would like to see some GUI/UI improvements like: - buttons in movie window instead of separate window - playlist in separate window - one application icon and not one for controls/playlist and one for movie in the dock.
other aqua control element for navigation in movie. The element used now is not ment for that purpose when this is done MPlayer will follow the HIG way better and make MPlayer better looking and easier to use.

I had a feeling itwas merely on par, but you've made my day. (There are only 10 minutesleft of it, though.)- I have experienced the cracking/stuttering too.
It's my top priorityright now.- There's no volume control; I pass the sound directly from MPlayer toCoreAudio, so naturally the volume is slightly lower. This is my secondpriority.Could you perhaps check the synchronisation, if it's correct?BTW, you should consider changing the settings for the mailing list sothe default reply is to the mailing list and perhaps with a Cc to thesender.- Dan. Attachments:Hi,Attached below is a native audio output module for Mac OS X using theCoreAudio API's hardware part. I would greatly appreciate it if someonecould try it and tell me what they think. It does not seem faster thanthe SDL audio output, but it's one step closer to getting rid of SDL onMac OS X.It connect directly to the audio output unit, and will request thehardware sampling rate (normally 44100Hz), channel count, sample size, etc. It uses 32bit floating point for the audio since that's whatCoreAudio expects. This could possibly be changed by using AudioUnitAPI, or by setting another format. There are still some issues with it.
It stutters when the system isbusy. It doesn't seem quite accurate, but I have a feeling thatsbecause of the timer. I've been working on a more accurate one, butthere are some weird bugs.I would greatly appreciate if someone could try this (and the timer) ona raw Darwin system w/o Mac OS X. Both should work. It would also benice if people would give it some general testing and see how well itworks.BTW, what is the meaning of aodata.outburst?- Dan Christiansen.
